Europe trip planning for U.S. travelers

For travelers from the United States, Europe works best as a collection of regions rather than one checklist. Countries can look close on a map, but changing cities takes time once hotel checkout, station or airport transfers and check-in are included. A first trip is often easier to plan around one region and two nearby countries.

Plan by region

For 10–14 days, choose two countries or two to three nearby cities. Paris–London, Madrid–Lisbon and Vienna–Prague are examples of connected routes.

Compare total travel time

Rail works well on many routes, but it is not automatically the best option for every journey. Include transfers and airport time when comparing.

Allow time between stops

Hotel rooms, rental cars, elevators and historic buildings can be more compact than U.S. equivalents. A central location can simplify a city stay.

Keep some flexibility

Book essential hotels, transport and high-demand experiences, then leave room in the schedule for local discoveries and rest.

Check entry rules

European countries do not all share the same entry requirements. Check official government information for each destination before booking.
