Editorial Notes on the Ranking

Why Florida narrowly wins. Florida has more than double the course density of its nearest rivals and a materially deeper Michelin scene than any other destination in the study. Costa del Sol and the Algarve answer with better climate reliability and stronger value, but Florida’s sheer breadth of options — across golf, dining, and accommodation alike — is what edges it into first place. The margin at the very top of the ranking is narrow, reflecting three destinations that are genuinely close in overall quality.

Why Scotland and Ireland rank below expectations. Both destinations post among the highest course-quality scores in the entire study, and neither result should be read as a knock on their golfing pedigree, which is essentially unmatched. What holds them back in a complete-destination ranking is climate reliability, marquee-course pricing, and a thinner gastronomy scene outside a handful of standout restaurants. This is the clearest illustration of the report’s stated philosophy: a ranking of destinations, not of golf courses, has to weight the full trip rather than the fairways alone.

Why Dubai finishes ahead of California. Dubai’s accessibility, accommodation, and gastronomy scores outweigh California’s single biggest advantage: home to the highest-rated course in the study. It’s the most counterintuitive result in the ranking, and worth stating plainly — Pebble Beach’s reputation alone isn’t enough to overcome Monterey’s weaker value and accessibility once the full travel experience is weighed.

Research Methodology and Supporting Evidence

Methodology

Each destination was evaluated using eight indicators covering both golf quality and the complete travel experience, normalized before weighted scoring was applied to produce the final ranking. A sensitivity analysis evaluated the robustness of the results under alternative weighting assumptions.

A Note on Comparability

Destinations were evaluated as established golf-travel markets rather than identical administrative units. Some are compact resort regions, while others are broader areas commonly planned and marketed as a single golf journey. Concentration and practical travel convenience were considered alongside total inventory to reduce the advantage of geographic size.

Sensitivity Analysis

To test the robustness of the ranking, the model was re-run under two alternative weighting scenarios: Golf Course Quality at 20% and at 30%, compared with the published weighting of 25%. The top three destinations — Florida, Costa del Sol, and Algarve — held their positions under both scenarios, indicating a stable, well-supported result at the top of the ranking.

The middle of the table proved more sensitive to weighting choice: Scotland and Ireland moved as much as ten places depending on how heavily course pedigree was weighted against trip logistics (climate, value, accessibility). This is not a flaw in the data — it reflects a genuine and legitimate editorial question about what a “golf destination” ranking should prioritize. The final published weighting (25% course quality) was selected as the position that best balances golf heritage against the complete-destination philosophy stated in this report’s introduction.

Independent Research and AI-Assisted Verification

The research framework, indicator selection, weighting methodology, analysis, interpretation, and editorial conclusions were developed independently by AmerExperience. Artificial intelligence was used as a research assistant to help collect publicly available information, compare multiple sources, identify inconsistencies, assist with calculations, and verify references. More than 200 individual primary and secondary sources were reviewed during the preparation of this study.

Official and primary sources were preferred wherever available. Where figures differed between sources or no standardized international dataset existed, multiple sources were compared and the most defensible value was used.
