Book your Latin America trip — hotels & activities in one place

AmerExperience is built as a one-stop shop: practical destination knowledge from three decades in destination management, paired with the booking tools to act on it immediately — no need to jump between five different sites to plan your trip.

Mexico City, Mexico

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

San José, Costa Rica

Panama City, Panama

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Which Latin American country should you visit first?

With ten countries to choose from, first-time visitors usually get stuck comparing “best of” lists instead of just picking a starting point. The right country depends less on rankings and more on what kind of trip you actually want. Here’s how I generally guide first-timers, based on travel style rather than a generic top-10.

Ruins & culture

Mexico or Peru — Maya and Inca sites paired with two of the region’s strongest food scenes.

Easy beach-first trip

Dominican Republic — direct flights, resort infrastructure, minimal planning required.

Eco-tourism & wildlife

Costa Rica or Ecuador — rainforest, volcanoes, and (in Ecuador’s case) the Galápagos, all with well-developed tourist infrastructure.

Modern city + history

Panama — a compact, modern capital built directly around Canal history.

Energy, beaches & the Amazon

Brazil — the only country in the region where a single trip can combine Rio’s coastline with an Amazon stop.

Dramatic landscapes

Argentina or Chile — both reach Patagonia, so the choice usually comes down to whether Buenos Aires or Santiago fits your route better.

Cities, coffee & coast in one trip

Colombia — Bogotá, the Coffee Triangle, and Caribbean Cartagena are all reachable on one itinerary without long internal flights.

Once you’ve picked a starting country, pairing it with one immediate neighbor (Peru + Bolivia, or Argentina + Chile) is usually more rewarding than trying to cover the whole continent in a single trip.

What does Latin America actually cost, country by country

Approximate 2026 per-person, per-day ranges — hotels by star tier, meals, tours and getting around. Real trips land somewhere in these ranges depending on season and neighborhood.

🇨🇱Chile$5585$95150$200340$2240$4080$510

Cheapest overall

Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador run consistently below the rest of the region across every category.

Priciest overall

The Dominican Republic and Costa Rica top the table on hotels and tours; Brazil and Chile aren’t far behind.

Argentina’s exchange-rate effect

Paying by card at the official rate roughly doubles these figures — using cash keeps costs near the ranges shown.

Figures are approximate 2026 per-person ranges compiled from current hotel listings and cost-of-travel data for Mexico City, Cartagena, San José, Lima, Buenos Aires, and Santiago; actual prices vary by season, neighborhood and exchange rate. “Meals” assumes one mid-range restaurant meal plus casual food across the day. “Tours” reflects a typical half-day guided activity.

Preguntas Frecuentes / Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need to see the main destinations in Latin America?

It depends on the route. A single country like Costa Rica or Ecuador works well in 7-10 days. To combine two or three countries — Peru and Chile, or Mexico and the Dominican Republic, for example — plan for 12-16 days so you’re not rushing.

What is the best time to visit Latin America?

There’s no single season for the whole region. The Caribbean (Mexico, Dominican Republic) is best from December to April, outside hurricane season. The Andes (Peru, Ecuador) have their dry season from May to September. And the south (Argentina, Chile) is best during the austral summer, December to March.

Is Latin America expensive to visit?

Generally it’s affordable compared to Europe or the US, though costs vary widely by country. Central America and the Andean countries tend to be cheaper; Brazil and the Caribbean’s tourist zones tend to run higher.

Beach, mountains, or jungle — which destination should I choose?

In my experience, most travelers choose between Caribbean beaches (Mexico, Dominican Republic), Andean culture (Peru, Ecuador), or dramatic landscapes in Patagonia (Chile, Argentina).

Do I need a rental car, or is public transport enough?

In big cities like Bogotá or Mexico City, public transport and taxi apps work well. To explore rural areas, Patagonia, or coastal routes, a rental car gives you much more freedom.
