The United States has thousands of golf courses, but a great golf course and a great golf destination are not quite the same thing. Three American destinations made the global Top 10. Florida finished first in the world with 86/100, Arizona ranked eighth with 78/100, and California ranked tenth with 77/100 while recording the highest golf-course-quality score in the entire study.

1. Florida — America’s Best Overall Golf Destination

Florida did not win the worldwide study because of one famous golf course. It won because very few destinations can match its overall depth. A golfer can build completely different trips around Orlando, Miami, Palm Beach, Naples, Jacksonville or Tampa and still have a substantial selection of courses, hotels and non-golf experiences.

The state scored particularly strongly for accommodation, accessibility and the variety of the complete travel experience. Major international airports in Orlando, Miami and South Florida also make it comparatively easy to construct a golf trip without complicated ground arrangements.

Where to Play Golf in Florida

Florida ranges from famous championship venues to resort golf and accessible public courses. TPC Sawgrass, Bay Hill and Streamsong belong to the state’s best-known golf names, while Golfscape currently offers bookable inventory across several of Florida’s principal golf regions.

Florida’s greatest strength is choice. It can be premium or relatively affordable, highly golf-focused or part of a family vacation. That flexibility is what ultimately pushed it ahead of every other destination in the AmerExperience Research™ study.

2. Arizona — America’s Best Desert Golf Destination

Arizona offers something Florida cannot replicate: golf that is visually and strategically shaped by the desert itself. The Scottsdale-Phoenix corridor concentrates a remarkable amount of golf into a relatively compact destination, making it particularly attractive for golfers who want to play several different courses without moving hotels.

The peak golf period generally runs from November through April, when Arizona becomes especially attractive to golfers escaping colder parts of North America and Europe. That same period is also the most desirable — and often the most expensive — time to play the leading Scottsdale courses.

Where to Play Golf in Arizona

TPC Scottsdale may be the internationally famous name because of the WM Phoenix Open, but the region is much deeper than one tournament venue. Troon North, We-Ko-Pa, Grayhawk and numerous resort and daily-fee courses make Scottsdale and Phoenix one of America’s strongest concentrated golf regions.

Arizona is perhaps the easiest of these three destinations to understand. If the objective is several rounds of visually dramatic desert golf, warm winter weather and a high-quality resort environment, Scottsdale-Phoenix is extremely difficult to beat.

3. California — America’s Most Iconic Championship Golf Experience

California produced the most interesting result in the entire Global Golf Destination Index. Its golf-course-quality score was 99/100, the highest in the study, yet the destination finished tenth overall.

That is not a contradiction. The study measures complete golf destinations rather than simply asking where the greatest golf courses are located. California’s extraordinary course quality is balanced by higher costs and the logistics of a state where the principal golf regions are separated by substantial distances.

The Monterey Peninsula is the obvious centerpiece. Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the most recognizable courses in the world, and the surrounding golf landscape makes this one of the great special-occasion golf trips. Palm Springs provides a completely different proposition: desert resort golf with a much larger concentration of accessible bookable tee times. San Diego adds another warm-weather golf option with a strong wider travel experience.
