Algarve Golf Holidays: Where to Play, Stay and When to Go

The Algarve is one of Europe’s easiest places to build a complete golf holiday: championship courses, excellent resorts, Atlantic beaches, seafood, Portuguese wine and a long playing season — all within a relatively compact region.

The important question is not whether the Algarve has good golf. It does. The useful question is where in the Algarve should you stay, which courses should you play and what kind of golf holiday do you want?

Vilamoura works extremely well for golfers who want several courses close together. Quinta do Lago is the premium golf-resort choice. Vale do Lobo combines golf and beach life. Lagos and the Western Algarve are better for travellers who want to explore between rounds. And Monte Rei gives serious golf travellers a reason to head east.

Where to Play Golf in the Algarve

The Algarve is not one single golf area. Choosing the right base can make more difference to the holiday than choosing the highest-ranked individual course.

Vilamoura: The Best All-Round Golf Base

For a first Algarve golf holiday, Vilamoura is probably the easiest place to start. Several established courses sit within a compact golf area, while the marina gives you restaurants, bars and an easy evening base after the round.

The Old Course is the classic name, but the real advantage of Vilamoura is choice. It works particularly well for groups playing three or four rounds because you can change courses without repeatedly changing hotels or spending large parts of the day in transfers.

Choose Vilamoura if: golf is the principal reason for travelling, you want several courses close together, or you are travelling with a golf group.

Quinta do Lago: Premium Golf and Resort Life

Quinta do Lago is the natural choice when you want the quality of the resort to match the quality of the golf. The South Course, North Course and Laranjal allow you to build several very good rounds around one premium base.

You are not coming here because it is the cheapest way to play golf in Portugal. You are coming because golf, accommodation, restaurants, service and surroundings form one coherent premium experience.

Choose Quinta do Lago if: you want a high-level golf holiday, prefer resort comfort and do not want to compromise on accommodation or surroundings.

Vale do Lobo: Golf + Beach

Vale do Lobo is particularly attractive when the holiday needs to work equally well on and off the golf course. The Royal and Ocean courses combine resort golf with one of the Algarve’s strongest coastal settings.

This is a very good choice for couples. You can play in the morning and spend the rest of the day at the beach, around the resort or enjoying a long lunch instead of treating every day as another 36-hole golf mission.

Choose Vale do Lobo if: you want golf, beach and resort lifestyle in the same holiday.

Western Algarve: Lagos, Palmares and Penina

The Western Algarve is the better choice if you want your golf holiday to feel more like travelling through Portugal and less like staying entirely inside a golf resort.

Palmares gives you golf above the Bay of Lagos, while Penina brings an important part of Algarve golf history. Lagos adds restaurants, a walkable historic centre and some of the most dramatic coastline in southern Portugal.

Choose the Western Algarve if: you like independent travel, coastal scenery and exploring between rounds.

Monte Rei & Eastern Algarve

Monte Rei changes the reason for travelling east. For many serious golfers, this is not simply another course to add because it happens to be nearby — it can be one of the principal rounds around which the trip is built.

Pairing the golf with Tavira and the quieter eastern Algarve also creates a different holiday from the large golf-resort concentrations around Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago.

Choose Eastern Algarve if: Monte Rei is a priority course or you prefer a quieter Portuguese base between rounds.

Which Algarve Golf Area Should You Choose?

Golf Courses Worth Putting on Your Shortlist

You do not need to play every famous course in the Algarve. Choose the rounds that fit your base and the kind of golf you enjoy.

• Old Course Vilamoura — one of the classic Algarve golf experiences.
• Quinta do Lago South — established championship resort golf.
• Quinta do Lago North — ideal for a multi-round stay at Quinta do Lago.
• Laranjal — another strong reason to base yourself in Quinta do Lago.
• Vale do Lobo Royal — the famous coastal option.
• Vale do Lobo Ocean — golf with the Atlantic playing a central part in the experience.
• Palmares — scenery and golf above the Bay of Lagos.
• Penina — an important piece of Algarve golf history.
• Monte Rei — one of the destination rounds serious Algarve golfers should consider.

My preference: three memorable rounds with enough time to enjoy Portugal rather than trying to collect five famous courses in four days.

Best Time for an Algarve Golf Holiday

March to May and September to October are the periods I would consider first for a golf-focused Algarve trip. Temperatures are generally better for playing than in midsummer, while restaurants, resorts and the wider destination remain active.

Summer can still work very well if golf is part of a beach holiday. Take an early tee time, finish before the strongest heat and leave the afternoon for the coast or pool.

Winter is interesting for golfers escaping northern European weather. Conditions are less predictable than in spring or autumn, but quieter courses and lower travel costs can improve the overall value considerably.

For the most popular courses during prime spring and autumn periods, I would secure the preferred tee times before treating the rest of the itinerary as final.

3, 5 or 7 Days in the Algarve?

The Algarve Is Better When You Don’t Play Golf Every Day

Golf may bring you to the Algarve, but there is little reason to ignore everything surrounding the course.

Leave time for the Atlantic coastline, grilled fish, seafood, Portuguese wine and one long lunch where nobody has to rush back for another tee time.

This is particularly important when travelling as a couple or with people who do not play golf. A strong golf destination should work for everybody travelling, not only for the person carrying the scorecard.

Why the Algarve Offers Such a Strong Luxury-to-Value Balance

The Algarve should not be marketed as cheap golf. Premium courses and five-star resorts can command premium prices.

Its advantage is the complete value of the holiday. A golfer can combine excellent courses, resort accommodation, good restaurants, beaches, wine and a sophisticated European travel experience without automatically entering the price levels associated with some of Europe’s most expensive luxury destinations.

This makes the Algarve especially attractive to golfers who are prepared to pay for quality but still care about what they receive for the total cost of the trip.

Algarve or Costa del Sol?

The Costa del Sol offers enormous golf choice together with Marbella, Málaga, nightlife and a larger tourism ecosystem. The Algarve generally feels more compact and relaxed, with a particularly strong combination of golf resorts, Atlantic coastline and Portuguese lifestyle.

If Marbella lifestyle and maximum course choice matter most, look seriously at the Costa del Sol. If you want excellent golf combined with a calmer premium holiday and a strong overall value proposition, the Algarve is particularly compelling.
