The United States Ranked the World’s Most Powerful Travel Destination

New international research explains why America remains one of the world’s most diverse travel experiences

According to the AmerExperience Travel Intelligence Index™, the United States ranks as the world’s most powerful travel destination, achieving the highest overall score among ten of the world’s leading tourism nations.

Unlike traditional rankings that focus only on visitor arrivals, the AmerExperience study evaluates destinations across eight indicators, including tourism economics, air connectivity, business travel, tourism infrastructure, cultural heritage, international meetings and long-term competitiveness.

The research concludes that no other country combines such a wide variety of travel experiences with such a strong tourism ecosystem.

Whether you dream of iconic cities, spectacular national parks, world-class entertainment or unforgettable road trips, the United States offers extraordinary diversity within a single destination.

Why the United States Ranked Number One

The AmerExperience Travel Intelligence Index™ found that the United States performs exceptionally well across multiple categories rather than relying on a single strength.

The country ranked first in Business Travel Importance, Tourism Economic Contribution, International Meetings and Long-Term Travel Competitiveness. It also scored among the world’s leaders for air connectivity and tourism infrastructure.

This combination creates a tourism ecosystem that is unmatched in both scale and diversity.

Unlike destinations built around one iconic city or one type of holiday, the United States offers global business centers, world-famous entertainment, tropical beaches, mountain resorts, deserts, national parks, historic towns and cultural experiences across all fifty states.

That breadth of experiences is one of the key reasons why the United States achieved the highest overall score in the study.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AmerExperience Travel Intelligence Index™?

The AmerExperience Travel Intelligence Index™ is an independent research study that ranks the world’s leading tourism nations using eight indicators, including tourism economics, air connectivity, business travel, tourism infrastructure, cultural heritage, international meetings and long-term competitiveness. Unlike rankings based solely on visitor arrivals, the Index measures the overall strength and diversity of a country’s tourism ecosystem.

Why did the United States rank as the world’s most powerful travel destination?

The United States ranked first because it performs strongly across nearly every category measured, rather than relying on a single strength. It led in Business Travel Importance, Tourism Economic Contribution, International Meetings and Long-Term Travel Competitiveness, and scored among the top nations for air connectivity and tourism infrastructure. This breadth, combined with the sheer diversity of experiences on offer, is what separated the US from other top-ranked countries.

What data was used to build the ranking?

The study draws on publicly available data from UN Tourism, the World Travel & Tourism Council, the World Economic Forum, UNESCO and ICCA. The full methodology and scoring matrix are published alongside the research report.

Which US destinations are considered the most popular with international travelers?

New York City, Miami, Las Vegas, Orlando and the Grand Canyon are among the destinations most frequently cited by international visitors, each representing a different type of travel experience — global city, tropical and cultural gateway, entertainment capital, family and convention hub, and natural wonder.

Is the United States a good destination for business travel, not just leisure?

Yes. The US ranked first in Business Travel Importance and International Meetings, reflecting its role as a global hub for conventions, corporate travel and international meetings alongside leisure tourism. In my experience, this dual identity — major business hub and top leisure destination in the same cities — is uncommon among countries competing for global travelers, and it’s part of why destinations like Orlando and Las Vegas work equally well for corporate and family trips.

How does the US compare to other top-ranked countries in the study?

While other countries in the top ten may lead in individual categories such as cultural heritage or air connectivity, the study found that none matched the United States’ combined strength across all eight indicators. This overall balance, rather than dominance in one area, is what produced the highest total score.
