AMEREXPERIENCE GOLF™ · RESEARCH-INFORMED GOLF TRAVEL
Every course. The right tee. A better golf trip.
Use the free online calculator to estimate a suitable course-length range from your total 7-iron distance and calculate your Course Handicap for any WHS-rated course worldwide. Enter your Handicap Index and the official Course Rating, Slope Rating and par for the exact tee you plan to play. Then download the free 14-page handbook and use its practical checklist before you book.
Built around the World Handicap System formula, USGA tee-selection guidance and practical golf-travel decisions.
How do I calculate my handicap at a different course?
Your Handicap Index describes your playing ability and travels with you. Your Course Handicap changes with the rated tee at the course you are playing. Enter the values printed for that exact tee:
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − par)
The calculator also shows a Playing Handicap when you enter a competition allowance and a target-score benchmark. It calculates Course Handicap from an existing Handicap Index; it does not create a Handicap Index from your score history. The 18-hole result follows WHS inputs. For posting scores or a 9-hole round, follow your national association’s official method.

Check your tee-length reference and Course Handicap
This tool is a planning aid. It does not replace your golf association’s official calculator.
The length band is a coarse reference from the USGA’s published 7-iron table, matched to the nearest reference distance. It is not a personalized tee recommendation. The Course Handicap result is for an 18-hole round; follow your national golf association’s app or tables for official scoring. Official USGA length calculator
Will this calculator work for a golf course in another country?
Yes, when the course and tee have official WHS Course Rating and Slope Rating values. The WHS is designed to make a Handicap Index portable across rated courses. Find the exact tee’s Course Rating, Slope Rating and par on the course scorecard, official app or national association site. If the local federation uses a different system, follow its rules.

What golf tee should I play based on my distance?
Start with your average total 7-iron distance—carry plus roll—not your longest drive. USGA’s Best Tees work uses 7-iron distance and course configuration as a practical starting point. Then adjust for the holes, course difficulty and the kind of round you want.
- Check forced carries, landing areas, approach-shot lengths and green targets.
- Compare the exact tee yardage with the distance you usually hit, not your personal best.
- Consider walking distance, cart access, weather, pace of play and the time available.
- For a mixed group, choose a course with several rated tees so everyone can play a suitable length.
Age or Handicap Index alone does not choose your tee. Fit the tee to your actual playing distance, course playability and preferred challenge.
What information do I need before booking a golf course?
- Your current Handicap Index, if you keep one.
- Your usual total 7-iron distance in yards or metres.
- The exact tee set’s Course Rating, Slope Rating, par and total length.
- Course details that affect playability: forced carries, terrain, hazards, greens and walking routes.
- Trip details: tee-time availability, green fee, transport, rental clubs and the needs of companions.
What does the downloadable golf-travel handbook help me decide?
The AmerExperience Golf™ handbook turns the calculation into a repeatable travel decision. It helps you compare a destination, assess tee length and course difficulty, apply Course Handicap correctly, and plan the day for the whole group.
- A five-step course-fit and tee-fit method.
- A pre-booking checklist you can use for every course on your shortlist.
- A worked WHS Course Handicap example and clear definitions of Handicap Index, Course Handicap and Playing Handicap.
- Research and official source links, plus travel factors such as walking effort, altitude, weather and group logistics.
Golf Course Handicap Calculator: common questions
Does my Handicap Index change when I play another course?
Your Handicap Index stays the same when you play another course. The number of strokes you receive changes because the course rating and the tee you choose are used to calculate your Course Handicap.
Is Course Handicap the same as Playing Handicap?
Not quite. Course Handicap is the number of strokes for the course and tee you are playing. Playing Handicap is Course Handicap adjusted by the competition’s handicap allowance.
Should I choose tees by handicap or driving distance?
Consider both, but start with your usual shot distances and the course layout. Choose a tee that makes the holes playable and gives you the level of challenge you want.
Does age determine which tee I should play?
No. Age alone does not determine the right tee. Consider your usual distances, the course layout and the challenge you want.
Is the calculator an official Handicap Index calculator?
No. It calculates Course Handicap from your existing Handicap Index and the selected tee’s Course Rating, Slope Rating and par. Your golf association maintains your official Handicap Index.
