USA vs Europe Golf Travel: Which Side of the Atlantic Should You Choose?

The Solheim Cup transforms one of golf’s great transatlantic rivalries into an intense team competition: the United States against Europe. For travelling golfers, the same rivalry creates a fascinating question. Should your next golf vacation take you to the resort courses, desert landscapes and warm-weather destinations of the USA—or to Europe’s historic links, Mediterranean golf regions and culturally rich journeys?

Choose your side ↓

Having lived and worked internationally for decades, including 27 years in Germany and many years in Latin America, I see this comparison from both sides of the Atlantic. As an amateur golfer, I am also interested in more than famous names. A successful golf vacation depends on whether the courses, logistics, atmosphere and experiences genuinely suit the people travelling.

The Solheim Cup: golf’s USA vs Europe rivalry

The Solheim Cup is a biennial match-play competition between 12 leading European players and 12 leading players from the United States. It combines elite women’s golf with team strategy, national and continental pride and an atmosphere unlike ordinary stroke-play tournaments.

The rivalry also reflects two powerful golf cultures. American golf is frequently associated with large-scale facilities, tournament-ready conditioning, golf resorts and operational convenience. European golf is inseparable from historic clubs, links traditions and courses shaped by natural landscapes over generations.

Why choose the United States for a golf vacation?

Island green surrounded by water on a championship golf course in Florida

The United States is particularly strong when golfers want an easy-to-organize vacation built around several rounds. Many destinations provide multiple courses, large practice facilities, golf resorts, restaurants and leisure services within one manageable area.

American golf also offers extraordinary geographical variety. Florida combines golf with beaches and major entertainment destinations. South Carolina offers Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island and the celebrated courses around Kiawah Island. Arizona delivers visually dramatic desert golf during the cooler months, while California combines famous courses with coastlines, major cities and wine regions.

Why choose Europe for a golf vacation?

Europe’s greatest advantage is the complete journey. Golf can be combined naturally with historic towns, coastal landscapes, wine regions, local gastronomy and several countries within one trip. Distances between very different experiences are often shorter than international visitors expect.

Scotland and Ireland offer the elemental experience of links golf, where wind, firm turf and natural contours influence every decision. England adds remarkable variety through links, heathland and parkland courses. Portugal and Spain provide longer playing seasons, resort infrastructure and a relaxed Mediterranean rhythm.

Scotland

The historic home of golf

Scotland offers legendary links, deeply rooted traditions and regions where several important courses can be combined in one journey.

Ireland

Which side has the better golf courses?

Course quality alone does not produce a useful answer. Both sides of the Atlantic have outstanding golf, but they deliver different experiences.

The United States often provides immaculate conditioning, comprehensive practice areas, golf carts, resort services and courses designed to create a polished visual and operational experience. Europe offers greater historical depth and, particularly in Britain and Ireland, a style of golf in which wind, terrain, creativity and course management matter as much as distance.

For a mid- or high-handicap golfer, the most famous course is not automatically the most enjoyable. Course difficulty, forward-tee options, walking conditions, pace of play and suitable tee-time availability should influence the choice. A carefully selected regional course can provide a better vacation round than a championship venue that does not suit the player.

Climate and the best time to play

There is no single golf season for either continent. The right timing depends on the chosen region.

  • Florida and Arizona: especially attractive during the cooler months, although peak-season demand can increase prices.
  • South Carolina: spring and autumn often provide an excellent balance of weather and playing conditions.
  • California: conditions vary considerably between coastal, desert and inland regions.
  • Scotland and Ireland: late spring through early autumn offers longer daylight, but changing weather remains part of links golf.
  • Portugal and southern Spain: spring and autumn are particularly attractive, while parts of the summer can be very hot.
  • Northern and central Europe: the principal golf season generally extends from spring into autumn.

Check current weather patterns, maintenance schedules and tee-time availability before confirming flights and accommodation.

Which is better for a non-playing partner?

Europe has a natural advantage when the journey should include history, architecture, gastronomy, wine and culture. A golfer can play in the morning while a partner explores a historic town, spa, market, museum or wine region.

The United States can be equally successful when the correct base is selected. Florida combines golf with beaches, shopping and entertainment. Scottsdale offers spas, restaurants and desert experiences. California connects golf with coastal drives, cities and wine country.

The decisive factor is not the continent. It is whether the itinerary treats the non-golfer as an equal traveller instead of an addition to the golf schedule.

How long should the golf trip be?

For one American golf region, five to seven nights can be sufficient. Seven to ten nights allows golfers to combine several courses with rest days and other experiences. Because distances are substantial, exploring one region properly is usually better than connecting several distant states.

For Europe, seven nights works well for one concentrated golf region such as the Algarve, Costa del Sol or a section of the Scottish coast. Ten to fourteen nights permits a more complete journey combining golf with cities, culture or two compatible regions.

What kind of golf vacation do you want?

Choose the USA if you want:

Large golf resorts, straightforward logistics, warm-weather regions, golf carts, comprehensive practice facilities and several rounds from one practical base.

Choose Europe if you want:

Historic links, distinctive golf cultures, compact regional journeys and an especially rich combination of golf, gastronomy, wine, cities and culture.

How to build an independent golf vacation

  1. Choose the season before choosing the course.
  2. Select one practical base or a logical two-base itinerary.
  3. Identify courses suitable for every golfer in the group.
  4. Check tee-time availability before finalizing accommodation.
  5. Allow recovery time instead of scheduling demanding rounds every day.
  6. Compare resort stays with independently booked hotels and tee times.
  7. Add experiences giving the destination value beyond golf.
  8. Confirm cancellation terms, transportation and golf-bag arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Is golf better in the USA or Europe?

Neither is universally better. The USA is particularly strong for resort infrastructure, warm-weather golf and convenient multi-round vacations. Europe stands out for historic links, cultural depth and the ability to combine several distinctive experiences within a relatively compact region.

Where should a first-time golf traveller go?

Florida and South Carolina are approachable choices in the United States. Portugal’s Algarve and Spain’s Costa del Sol are practical European starting points. Golfers seeking the history and challenge of links golf should consider Scotland or Ireland.

Which side is better for winter golf?

Florida, Arizona, southern California, Portugal’s Algarve and southern Spain are among the strongest options. The best choice depends on flight access, weather preferences, budget and the golf experience desired.

Should tee times be booked before the hotel?

For famous courses and peak travel periods, check tee-time availability before committing to non-refundable accommodation. For a flexible regional trip, choose the destination and provisional base first, then coordinate the hotel and course schedule carefully.

Can the trip be organized independently?

Yes. Independent planning provides greater control over flights, hotels, courses and experiences. The essential task is ensuring that the selected courses, accommodation and transportation form one practical itinerary rather than a collection of disconnected bookings.

The AmerExperience perspective

If convenience, resort facilities and several rounds from one base are your priorities, I would look first at the United States. If golf is one important part of a broader journey involving history, food, wine and culture, Europe may deliver greater overall depth.

My preferred approach is not to select a destination simply because it contains the most famous course. Choose the destination that creates the best complete journey for your playing level, season and companions. The right golf vacation should remain memorable long after the individual scores have been forgotten.
