Among these five European countries, the AmerExperience Travel Intelligence Index™ produced the following results:

Spain therefore emerges as the strongest overall European travel destination among the five countries compared.

But that does not necessarily mean Spain is the best choice for every traveler.

1. Spain – Best overall European travel destination

Spain has developed one of the most complete tourism ecosystems in the world.

Madrid and Barcelona provide two major international city destinations. Andalusia offers Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Málaga and the Costa del Sol. Paris alone would make France one of the world’s great destinations. The Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Montmartre and the Seine create one of travel’s most recognizable urban landscapes.

But limiting France to Paris misses much of what makes the country exceptional.

The United Kingdom finishes only fractionally behind Germany in the AmerExperience research.

In fact, the difference between Germany’s 64.89 and the UK’s 64.82 is so small that the two should effectively be considered tied at the displayed level of precision.

London is obviously the country’s international tourism powerhouse.

Few cities combine history, finance, culture, entertainment, museums, shopping, gastronomy and international connectivity on the same scale.

But Britain becomes considerably more interesting when travelers move beyond London.

Oxford, Cambridge, Bath and York provide very different historic experiences. Scotland offers spectacular landscapes and some of the world’s most famous golf traditions, while the English countryside provides villages, castles and rural escapes within relatively short distances of major cities.

This is probably the most difficult choice for many travelers.

Choose Spain if you want the strongest combination of beaches, cities, climate, nightlife, gastronomy and tourism infrastructure.

Choose France if culture, wine, gastronomy, museums and elegant cities are central to your trip.

Choose Italy if history, architecture, art and regional food experiences matter most.
