Gemma Clews from England Secures Thrilling Play-Off Victory at Smorum Ladies Open for First LET Access Series Win

England’s Gemma Clews secured her first LET Access Series victory in a thrilling play-off at the Smorum Ladies Open in Denmark.

Despite being five shots behind going into the final round at Smorum Golf Club in Copenhagen, the 28-year-old from Manchester delivered an impressive four-under 68, including three birdies on the back nine, to force a play-off with Sweden’s Corrinne Viden and Nathalie Borg.

In the play-off, Borg encountered trouble in the trees off the tee, while Viden could only manage a bogey. Clews, displaying composure under pressure, calmly two-putted for victory from close range, claiming her second professional title and her first since winning on the Rose Ladies Series in 2021.

Reflecting on her winning moment in Denmark, Gemma Clews expressed her elation, stating, “I’m feeling amazing to get my first LET Access win. In the playoff, I tried to stick to what I’ve done the last couple of days. The 18th hole is a par four which gives you options, because you can go for the green with a driver or lay up and wedge it on. I made birdie on it in the final round, so I knew I was going to commit to it and try to make a birdie.”

During the final round, Clews received support from fellow England player Sharna Dutrieux, who stepped in as her caddie after having to withdraw from the tournament earlier in the week due to injury.

Highlighting the significance of her victory, Clews emphasized that any win at any point in the season carries weight due to the potential points earned. She expressed hope that this win would provide momentum for the upcoming events.

Following her triumph, Clews moved up to second place on the LETAS Order of Merit, trailing behind Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen, the runaway leader who has already secured two victories and three second-place finishes in just eight starts. The top six players at the end of the season earn promotion to the Ladies European Tour.
