Generalmente cuando se habla de reservas estratégicas con las que cuentan algunos países, se piensa en las que, desde hace décadas, se han considerado como las más importantes: las de petróleo.
Pero en realidad, el término engloba cualquier artículo, materia prima o mercancía retenida por gobiernos, organizaciones o empresas, y que forman parte de una estrategia para hacer frente a situaciones de emergencia como un huracán o una pandemia global.
La covid-19 ha tomado a muchos gobiernos por sorpresa. Las reservas estratégicas de un país suelen efectivamente centrarse en crudo y minerales como el oro; hasta febrero de este año pocos habían pensado que contar con un buen suministro de mascarillas y respiradores – artículos que han escaseado en gran parte del planeta desde la aparición del virus – sería tan crucial.
Ahora, debido a la pandemia de coronavirus, varios gobiernos se están replanteando el modelo de reservas estratégicas.
