Southwest Airlines will continue its policy of keeping middle seats open through at least Sept. 30, the carrier announced on Tuesday.
Southwest, which allows travelers to pick their own seats when boarding, is not blocking middle seats but is selling flights at reduced capacity so that no one has to take a middle seat. Those traveling together who wish to use middle seats still are allowed to use them.
The carrier also as of Tuesday has added a health declaration for travelers checking in online or via mobile app. Upon check-in, travelers must confirm that they do not have Covid-19 symptoms and have not been diagnosed with or exposed to the virus within 14 days prior to the travel date.
In addition, as one of the carriers that agreed to Airlines for America’s recent policies regarding facial coverings, Southwest now has a policy of denying boarding to travelers who refuse to wear them, according to the carrier.
