How many registered golfers are in Europe? 

According to the European Golf Association, the 2021 European Golf Participation Report showed an encouraging increase in the number of registered players across the continent. 35 of the EGA’s 49 members saw growth in participation despite the pandemic. There are 4.32 million golfers registered with the EGA’s 49 Member Federations.

I will also share some studies and facts about unregistered golfers and what is the current trend of golf’s popularity during the pandemic and post-pandemic period.

Top 5 European countries with the most registered golfers are: England (692,500), Germany (651,417), Sweden (538,962), the Netherlands (407,302) and France (402,991). What is the total number of golfers in Europe?

Lassi Pensikkala: “The above numbers and statistics refer to the golfers registered in the national golf federations, which in turn are members of the EGA. The total number of golfers in Europe is likely to be much higher.”

In fact, in a recent report published by The R&A and the European Golf Association (EGA), it states that there are now over 10.6 million people enjoying golf in Europe, a healthy increase from the 7.9 million last monitored in 2016 published in Golf Monthly.

The magazine goes on to report that the breakdown of the overall golf community in Europe also shows that there are more independent golfers (59%) than golfers who are registered as members of their national federation (41%).

Has golf gotten more popular?

Phil Anderton, Chief Development Officer at The R&A, said, “An overall rise in golf participation is always encouraging and with over 10.6 million golfers now enjoying the sport on full-length courses across Europe, it is clear to see that a wide range of initiatives are having a positive impact and that golfers are enjoying the healthy benefits the sport provides.”

Golf has actually gained many players in recent years. An important factor is that golf has been able to be played safely during the Covid-19 pandemic to benefit golfers’ mental and physical health.

Additionally, people simply have more time for golf because they haven’t been able to practice other sports during the pandemic and have chosen golf as their new favorite sport.

The second edition of the European Golf Participation Report paints a promising picture of the state of golf in Europe. The report, published by The R&A and the European Golf Association (EGA) using research conducted by Sports Marketing Surveys, showsOther key findings include:

• England (up by 63,500) and Sweden (up by 54,589) saw the greatest growth in registered golfers
• Iceland (17.7%), Scotland (10.9%), England (8%) and Ireland (7.8%) have the highest proportion of total golfers compared to their populations
• Women golfers across Europe increased by 13,000 to just over 1 million
• Germany (221,865), Sweden (129,949) and the Netherlands (125,537) are the top three markets for the number of registered women golfers
• Junior golfers across Europe increased by over 43,000 to more than 350,000
• Sweden (61,839), England (45,304) and Germany (41,212) are the top three markets for the number of registered junior golfers

Is golf also becoming more popular in the USA?

The trend in golf popularity in the US is similar to that in Europe, albeit at a more moderate percentage. CNBC writes in a very interesting article that golf has surged in popularity in almost every way in 2020 as people sought socially distanced outdoor activities during the pandemic.
